Critical materials in UAH and other laboratories protected by backup power when tornadoes struck

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Much of the research, experiments and vital treatment materials in Huntsville laboratories are protected by backup power sources and safe in the aftermath of Wednesday's tornadoes and storms.

"We have biological specimens that represent not only high-dollar value but time value," said Dr. Joseph Ng, who teaches biology at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Ubiquity Genomics

Ubiquity Genomics provides tools for targeted DNA sequencing.  The company’s proprietary technology allows researchers to focus genetic and epigenetic analyses on specific regions of the genome at a fraction of the cost of other commercially available approaches.  Release of MHC Complete, the company’s first product, is anticipated in the first quarter of 2014. MHC Complete reagents will enable scientists to sequence the entire MHC locus, a region of great importance to disease research.

Serina announces partnership with Scripps Research Institute

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Huntsville phamaceutical company Serina Therapeutics has signed an agreement with Scripps Research Institute to develop new cancer drugs using its polymer-based technology. Scripps is a large independent non-profit biomedical research institute with campuses in California and Florida.
 
Serina's proprietary polymer technology will be used to form new "antibody drug conjugates" under the agreement, Serina President and CEO Dr. Randal Moreadith said in an Aug. 6 interview. Antibodies are the body's natural defense mechanisms against infection and disease, and antibody drug conjugates - a method of attaching drugs to antibodies to aim those drugs directly at diseased cells - have moved from theoretical to increasingly possible in recent years. Two new antibody drugs have been announced recently targeting breast cancer and lymphoma.
